As the next-to-last doubleheader in the AUSL Cup is in the books, the leaderboard is a two-player race. Kayla Kowalik, captaining Team Gold, is slightly ahead of pitcher Rachel Garcia, the captain of Team Blue. Both teams faced off in the first game of the doubleheader at Parkway Bank Stadium in Rosemont. That being said, here is a recap of that game along with Team Purple, led by pitcher Keilani Ricketts, against outfielder Erin Coffel and Team Orange.
Here, Team Coffel and Team Ricketts were in search of their first of Series Four. In this game, the offense began in the top of the third inning. A solo homer by Bella Dayton put Ricketts’ squad on the board first. Also, an RBI single by Bubba Nickles-Camarena and a Sharlize Palacios sacrifice fly RBI rounded out the scoring in the inning. Coffel and her power added a run with a solo homer in the bottom of the third.
However, Anissa Urtez slammed a three-run home run to left field to giving Team Purple a 6-1 lead in the top of the sixth. That score gave Ricketts all 130 win points as Georgina Corrick shined in the circle. Winning MVP 1 honors, Corrick went the distance, allowing three hits with six strikeouts. She leads the AUSL Cup with 31 strikeouts and most strikes thrown (361).
Urtez and her three-RBI performance gave her MVP 2 honors as Dayton won MVP 3 honors thanks to her solo homer. As for Defensive MVP, it went to Palacios.
All things considered, this game between Team Kowalik and Team Garcia might decide the champion of this year’s AUSL Cup. Kowalik and Team Gold entered undefeated along with Garcia and Team Purple. Nonetheless, Garcia’s squad found the scoreboard early in the top of the first inning.
In this case, all of the run came from Garcia by way of a three-run home run. Following a scoreless second frame, Team Garcia added two more runs in the third with a Taylor Edwards RBI double and an RBI for Ana Gold via a hit pitch. The lone run for Team Kowalik came from a sacrifice fly RBI by the captain in the bottom of the fourth. A Dejah Mulipola RBI single in the sixth gave Team Garcia the 6-1 win over Team Kowalik.
Without question, Garcia did it all at the plate and in the circle as she took home MVP 1 honors. She went four-and-two-thirds, allowing two hits with six strikeouts. Additionally, her three RBIs at the dish as well made the difference.
Edwards and Mulipola won MVP 2 and MVP 3 honors, respectively, in the win. Lastly, Kendra Falby rounded out the sweep of honors, winning Defensive MVP of the game. Now, Garcia trails Ricketts by 186 points entering the final doubleheader of the AUSL Cup.
