Father of Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier Passes Away
The Miami Dolphins announced that the father of general manager Chris Grier, Bobby Grier, has passed away.
Bobby Grier had a long history in the sport of football, as a coach on the college and NFL level, then as a scout, director of pro scouting, director of player personnel, and Vice president of player personnel for the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.
Since 2017, he has been a consultant for the Miami Dolphins.
One of Bobby Grier’s final duties with the Patriots was doing extensive scouting on quarterback prospect Tom Brady prior to that year’s draft. The Patriots selected him in that draft, and Grier then left a few weeks later for a position with the Houston Texans.
In Houston, Wade Phillips gave all the credit for Houston selecting JJ Watt to Bobby Grier and the work and research he did on Watt in the lead up to that draft.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Bobby Grier, father of general manager Chris Grier. Bobby was a longtime executive for the Patriots and Texans and a former consultant for the Dolphins.

Both of Bobby Grier’s sons are general managers: Chris with the Dolphins and Mike Grier with the San Jose Sharks of the NHL.
Former Patriots player Andre Tippett in an ESPN article had this to say about Bobby Grier; “Bobby was the strong, silent type — a leader who could always get the best of you. I had the good fortune of watching him as a coach and later as a personnel guy,” said former Patriots linebacker and Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Tippett, who also worked under Grier as a scout. “He inspired people to think bigger and do bigger things.”
Everyone at DolphinsTalk.com would like to send their condolences to the Grier family.
