The end of the South American ski season may be on the horizon, but that hasn’t stopped Mother Nature from giving skiers another taste of winter.
Over the past week, a storm rolled through Chile and Argentina, depositing plenty of fresh powder. At Ski Portillo, Chile, three feet of snow fell in four days. That allowed the ski resort to open new terrain like Lake Run, Cara Cara, and the Traverse.
“This storm should allow us to offer great skiing until our closing day, September 27,” a spokesperson for Ski Portillo wrote in an email. But how did skiing at Portillo look during the storm? Well, based on these images, pretty darn good.

Pro skier Daron Rahlves recently took advantage of the deep snow at Ski Portillo, notching a line down the Super C Couloir.
“That snow made it a mission on the ascent, but so worth it for the seemingly endless pow turns,” he wrote. Looks about right.

Located in the Central Andes, Ski Portillo is among South America’s best-known ski resorts. The iconic yellow base area hotel helped build that reputation, but Ski Portillo’s terrain draws the most attention.
The above treeline trails at the ski resort are steep and gnarly. Visitors looking for an additional challenge can always venture out of bounds, provided they have the requisite avalanche training and skills.
For the foreseeable future, those lines should hold plenty of secret powder stashes. To perhaps prompt last-minute trips to the southern hemisphere, Ski Portillo’s low-season prices begin in four days on August 30, 2025.
As the storm blew through South America, Ski Portillo wasn’t the only mountain to benefit. In the past week, Valle Nevado, Chile, tallied 64 inches. La Parva, another ski resort in Chile’s Tres Valles, saw about 70 inches.
Meanwhile, ski resorts across North America have begun announcing their planned opening dates. It might be August, but another ski season is just around the corner.
