Floyd Mayweather Pushes for Curmel Moton vs. Lamont Roach Title Fight

Hall of Fame fighter-turned-promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr. is determined to fast-track his prized protege, Curmel Moton, into the world-title picture. With the collapse of Gervonta Davis’ planned rematch against WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr., Mayweather is calling for Roach to defend his belt against the 19-year-old rising star.

On Friday, Mayweather posted an image of a fight poster on Instagram with the caption: “Let’s make this fight happen. Curmel Moton is already in. Roach, let’s do it. Even if I have to put up the money.” The bold statement underscored his confidence in Moton’s readiness and his willingness to personally finance the bout to make it happen.

Roach didn’t shy away from the attention. Responding on X (formerly Twitter), the WBA champion took a playful jab at Mayweather: “Come on now Floyd… Set it up with me and you! We can run it, let’s see what you got left in that gas tank!” While clearly tongue in cheek, Roach’s response showed he’s not rattled by Mayweather’s push and is willing to embrace the spotlight.

From Davis–Roach to Moton–Roach

The push for Moton comes after months of uncertainty in the division. Originally, a rematch between Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Roach was planned for June 21, then August 16, but both dates fell through. Davis has since shifted focus to an exhibition bout against Jake Paul in November. Leaving Roach without a clear next opponent.

That vacuum opened the door for Mayweather’s pitch. Moton (8–0, 6 KOs), who has been widely praised as a generational talent, has been touted as the “second coming” of Davis himself. But while the Las Vegas native has impressed in his early fights, he hasn’t faced competition anywhere near Roach’s level.

Roach (25–1–2, 10 KOs), meanwhile, is enjoying the best stretch of his career. The 29-year-old Washington, D.C. native is coming off strong title defenses and has also been linked to a potential showdown with Shakur Stevenson, making Mayweather’s challenge even more intriguing.

Mayweather’s public push is as much about business as it is boxing. By inserting Moton into the title picture, Mayweather Promotions keeps its momentum alive in a division where Tank Davis’ path has become complicated. The matchup also has star power, given Mayweather’s involvement and Moton’s reputation as the “next big thing.”

Whether the fight materializes depends on negotiations between Mayweather Promotions, Roach’s camp, and the sanctioning body. But one thing is certain. Mayweather is all in on making Moton a star, and he’s willing to put his money where his mouth is to make it happen.
