Alabama fans have no trouble remembering what happened back in 2012, when Johnny Manziel led Texas A&M to a thrilling upset over the No. 1 Crimson Tide.
That game became a legacy moment for Manziel, who was quite the character both on and off the field at the time.
Recently, a former Alabama star shared a story involving Manziel—one that dates back to their time at the Manning Passing Academy, where Manziel allegedly blamed him for getting kicked out.
The Manning Passing Academy is a prestigious summer event where top high school and college quarterbacks gather to work with the Manning family. McCarron and Manziel were roommates during their time at the camp.
“It was weird because he wasn’t there at the 8 a.m. counselor meeting that morning,” McCarron said on the McCready and Siskey Podcast recently. “And when you’re a counselor, you’re in charge of a group of about 40 kids. Mr. Archie [Manning], when I walked in that morning, asked me, ‘Hey, where’s Johnny?’ I said, ‘Hell, I don’t know. He’s not here.’ So he goes, ‘Alright, let’s call him.’”
“A&M was at media days the day before we went & they asked (Manziel) about it. Johnny told the media that I didn’t wake him up… I was like c’mon” - @10AJMcCarron

“So we call him—no answer. Then around noon, Mr. Archie calls me and says, ‘Johnny just showed up. I hate to put you in this situation, but we’re going to send him home, AJ. And if you get any blowback about this, just let me know and we’ll handle it.’”
McCarron did end up catching some blowback—but not in the way he expected. Shortly after, at SEC Media Days, Manziel appeared to pin the blame on him.
“[Texas] A&M was at Media Days the day before us,” McCarron recalled. “They asked him about it there, and Johnny told the media that I didn’t wake him up. I was like, ‘C’mon.’ That last day of Media Days in Birmingham—or Hoover—was pretty interesting.”
