Cale Breslin wasn’t supposed to be looking for a new football home.
The former three-star BYU commit, once hailed as a promising addition to the Cougars’ 2025 class, is heading to Montana State after a spring full of twists. For fans in Provo, the news stings — not because he left, but because of why he had to.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound running back from Faith Lutheran (Las Vegas) signed with BYU in December, choosing the Cougars over seven FBS offers including Wisconsin, San Diego State, and Syracuse. But after an injury sidelined him during spring camp, Breslin says he was informed during exit meetings that BYU would not have a fall roster spot available for him.
“I’m 100% healthy now,” Breslin told 406 MT Sports, noting he posted a workout video to assure programs he was ready to go. “Whoever wants me, I want to be with them.”
Montana State stepped up. The FCS power has built a strong reputation for pounding the rock — and that’s exactly what sold Breslin.
“It’s a blessing that I got picked up,” he said. “I like their schemes, the way they run the ball and the running back-friendly culture over there.”
And the numbers back up his upside. At Faith Lutheran, Breslin racked up 2,810 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns, while adding 364 receiving yards and three more scores. His self-assessment? “I can really do anything they want me to do. I can go in between the tackles. I can bounce it out. I can break a long one. I can be in the passing game,” Breslin stated.
For BYU fans, it’s a cautionary tale in the transfer portal era — where a missed spring can shift a player’s entire trajectory. And while Breslin won’t be lining up in LaVell Edwards Stadium, he’ll be hard to miss if he’s carving up defenses for the Bobcats.
The Cougars may have moved on. But don’t be surprised if Cale Breslin makes them look back.
