This college football season, a large portion of Indianapolis Colts fans likely have a soft spot for Stanford University's football team; some might have even become fans this offseason.
The reason for this is that it will be the former Colts' number one overall selection and quarterback Andrew Luck's first year as the program's general manager. If that wasn't enough of a connection to the Colts, Luck also brought on his former head coach, Frank Reich, to hold the same role at Stanford this season. The team's first game of the season happened Saturday night, and it seems things are off to a rocky start for Luck, Reich, and the Stanford Cardinals.

Stanford kicked off their season opener on the road against Hawaii in week zero of the college football season. It was a back-and-forth game, but midway through the fourth quarter, Stanford seemed to be in the driver's seat. The Cardinals scored a touchdown with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter to put them up 20-17. They then forced a quick three and out and had the ball to go up two scores. They put up what appeared to be another scoring drive in the making, moving the ball down the field with a big 36 yard completion. The very next play, though, saw Stanford's QB Ben Gulbranson throw an interception that would change everything. Hawaii drove down the field for a field goal to tie the game at 20 on their next drive, followed by forcing a quick three-and-out of their own to regain possession with under two minutes remaining. This gave them the ball, giving them a chance to win the game. And that's just what they did with Hawaii kicker Kansei Matsuzawa connecting on a field goal from 38 yards out as time expired.

Luck had to have known he had a tall task on his hands to turn around a Stanford football team that went 3-9 last season and 2-6 in the ACC. And if he didn't realize that before, he surely knows it now. Luck and Reich have both been part of successful football teams and understand what it takes to win at every level of the game. Both have been away from football for a bit, though, and Stanford is serving as their homecoming to the game they both love. Hopefully, they can get this ship back on track. This was just one game at the end of the day; it can either be a loss that the team learns and grows from, or it can be the first of many bad moments to come for the upcoming season.
