The free agent market is going to be filled with so many players that the Philadelphia Eagles know could be instant upgrades to the roster. Could they look at a former player from their 2017 Super Bowl championship team to help them out?
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Houston Texans had released former Eagles safety Jalen Mills from the roster. With another Eagles tie in, Mills was brought in as the replacement for another former Eagles, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who got hurt during training camp.

Mills was selected by the Eagles in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He became one of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman's gems from the draft, the first since Roseman took back general manager powers from Chip Kelly. Mills started 49 of 63 games from 2016 through 2020, racking up 283 tackles, 40 pass deflections, six tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, and five interceptions.
At age 31, Mills can still play at a high level, but he is definitely in the back half of his career. He would work better as a backup and help support when injuries occur.
Reed Blankenship is the leader in the secondary. The biggest question for the Eagles is who will start between Sydney Brown and rookie Andrew Mukuba.
Before Mukuba's injury in training camp, he seemed to have the edge, but now it is a toss up between him and Brown. The edge might be given to Brown with his experience, but even that won't have fans excited.
Despite Mills being more in the twilight of his career, he might have a chance to be a more efficient starter than Brown and Mukuba for now. The hope would be to eventually have Mukuba be the full-time starter at safety with Blankenship.
The likelihood of Mills returning home is probably not that strong, but it would be a nice thought for Eagles fans.
