Former Los Angeles Rams draft mistake's strong preseason has redeemed his odds on making the 53-man roster

Throughout the entire offseason, the Los Angeles Rams had the attention of the NFL because of quarterback Matthew Stafford, both with his contract drama and recent health scare.

However, a different quarterback had begun taking strides in a battle for the backup spot behind Stafford to secure his own spot on the roster.

Stetson Bennett Makes Case for a spot on the Rams Roster

At the beginning of the offseason, I wrote about how former fourth-round pick quarterback Stetson Bennett IV was proving the Rams wrong and likely wouldn't make the Rams' roster when they got to the 53-man roster cutdowns.

Bennett had missed his entire rookie season and then performed abysmally in the preseason last year, completing less than 60% of his passes and throwing five interceptions to just two touchdowns. Optimism was fairly low.

However, Bennett flipped the script in his third season in the league and lit up the preseason in 2025. He played the first two games, completing 68.8% of his passes for 512 yards and five touchdowns to just two interceptions, and has shown a fairly solid command of a very limited Rams' playbook.

He did such a standout job that he completely sat out the Rams' third preseason game, forcing Dresser Winn to play the entire game. Earlier this week, Sean McVay stated that most players who wouldn't play in their third game were bound to make the 53-man roster, so this should be an encouraging sign for Bennett's odds to make the roster.

What helps Bennett's case out is that his performance this preseason would make it very difficult for the Rams to try and sneak him onto the practice squad. His age and relative expense might make other teams hesitant to claim him were the Rams to waive him, but the lack of quarterbacks across the league make me feel comfortable predicting someone would bring him in if the Rams did decide to move on.

The concern around Matthew Stafford's back should also help Bennett's odds out. If Stafford has to miss any time this season, Jimmy Garoppolo would be the starter, and the Rams don't have another quarterback behind him.

Make no mistake though, Stetson Bennett has made a case for the Rams' 53-man roster on his own merits. He has been the Rams' biggest surprise so far this preseason, and should get his flowers for finally looking like a rosterable player for Los Angeles.
