Former Mizzou Wide Receivers Impress in NFL Week 2 Preseason Games

A week after getting their first taste of NFL action, a pair of former Mizzou standouts stood out in Week 2 preseason games.

Fighting to make a roster spot with the Miami Dolphins, rookie wideout Theo Wease Jr. caught two touchdown passes in a 24-17 win over the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

Wease finished the game with six receptions for 80 yards to go with the two scores. Through two preseason games, he is tied for the team lead in receptions (7) and second with 85 receiving yards.

A transfer from Oklahoma, Wease played in 26 games with Mizzou, compiled 109 receptions for 1,566 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last season, he led all Tigers wideouts with 884 receiving yards, averaging 14.7 yards per catch.

Shortly after going undrafted in April, the Dolphins quickly signed Wease as a free agent. While the team has not released an official depth chart, the Palm Beach Post's Joe Schad is projecting Wease to be placed on the team's practice squad despite his standout performance Saturday.

Sunday, it was Wease's former Tigers teammate Luther Burden III who turned heads. Playing most of the game with the second team offense, Burden was impressive in the Chicago Bears 38-0 rout of the Buffalo Bills. He caught all three of his targets for 49 yards and threw two huge blocks that led to goal-line touchdown runs.

He also issued a warning to opposing defenses that give him too much space to run. "I mean, if I get too much space there is going to be a problem." Burden said following the win.

Thought by many to be a steal, Burden was drafted in the second round (39th overall) by the Bears in this year's NFL Draft. Through two preseason games, he's leading the team with 78 receiving yards.
