The Ohio State Buckeyes have become a wide receiver factory in recent years, which is a testament to the culture Brian Hartline has built within the position. Emeka Egbuka is the latest first-round pick out of Columbus, landing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There may not have been a better spot for Egbuka to land than alongside wideouts Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, paired with a quarterback like Baker Mayfield, who isn’t afraid to spread the ball around.

One of Egbuka’s new teammates used to be a Big Ten rival back when he was with the Oregon Ducks. Now, he’s giving the former Buckeye his flowers for the kind of player he is.

Former Oregon star Tez Johnson gets real about Emeka Egbuka

Johnson spent the last two seasons at Oregon and played a key role in the Ducks’ win over Ohio State last October, finishing with 75 yards and a touchdown. Now, Johnson and Egbuka are teammates in Tampa Bay.

“He’s an Ohio State guy—and he beat me in the Rose Bowl,” Johnson said on Sunday. “But he’s a good guy. He’s very twitchy for his size, and he runs really good routes and has really strong hands. The guy’s smart—he’s a human computer.”

That’s a strong breakdown of Egbuka, who holds the Ohio State record for career receptions with 205 over four seasons. He surpassed 1,000 receiving yards twice and played a major role on the Buckeyes’ National Championship team. He’s widely viewed as a smart player and a dependable teammate—exactly the kind of guy coaches want in their locker room.

The early returns on Egbuka have already been positive, which comes as no surprise to Ohio State fans. The former Buckeye made an immediate impact after arriving in Columbus from the West Coast—and he’ll be tough for Ohio State to replace this fall.
