Boo Carter is one of the more intriguing true freshmen to come onto Rocky Top in a while. The 5'11" 180-pound athlete out of Bradley-Central High School who could play at a high level on either side of the ball, has joined defensive coordinator Tim Banks' defense and has already earned a lot of praise from Banks, Josh Heupel, and recently defensive backs coach Willie Martinez.
"Boo is explosive," said Martinez. "Boo, you put him in any kind of drill and he’s going to show up. He’s so athletic. He’s quick. He’s got great instincts."
Carter didn't take long to excite fans with his potential. On Saturday early in the first quarter of the annual Orange and White game, Carter registered the first impact play of the game.
On 4th and 2, running back Khalifa Keith took a handoff and was quickly upended for a loss by Carter to turn the ball over on downs. Carter was able to shoot in and beat the blockers and get to Keith shortly after the handoff.
That's the kind of athleticism, quickness, and playmaking ability that coaches have praised so far in spring football. It's the kind of upside that should have him in the conversation for significant playing time this fall, if not potentially for a starting spot.
Carter also has been in the equation to return kicks and punts, per special teams coach Mike Ekeler. Those words proved true, as Carter fielded punts on Saturday during the spring game.
It appears that Heupel and the staff has a lot of faith in their exciting young freshman, and Saturday was a clear sign that he will be in the team's plans early and often this fall.
