The Charge struck first, taking the 1-0 lead 11 minutes, 34 seconds into the second period on Rebecca Leslie's goal. Ottawa had a power-play opportunity after that in the period, and there was some 4-on-4 hockey in the third, but defense kept holding firm.
Nicole Hensley made 17 saves on 19 shots for Minnesota, while the Frost couldn't solve Ottawa goalie Gwyneth Phillips, who stopped 25 of 26 Minnesota shots.
The Frost and Charge meet for Game 2 of the Finals at 6 p.m. CT Thursday in Ottawa.
