The new season has not gone as per the plan for Manchester United. They have picked up just a point from two games, putting head coach Ruben Amorim already under pressure.
The Red Devils drew 1-1 at Fulham in an underwhelming performance to follow on their positive showing in opening weekend defeat to Arsenal. It leaves Ruben Amorim with an extremely worrying record of just four wins in 28 Premier League matches. The Portuguese has spent big on new forwards this summer, but the issues continue to persist in defence- particularly in goal.
Altay Bayindir has started both Manchester United games and looked vulnerable from set-piece situations. It was his mistake that gifted Arsenal three points at Old Trafford, while the Turkish international royally struggled to deal with Fulham’s corners and set-plays on Sunday.
Ruben Amorim has decided to go with Bayindir, after Andre Onana spent the entire pre-season on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury. The African shot-stopper has failed to convince across two error-strewn seasons in the Premier League, leading to uncomfortable questions being asked of his future. This has led to the 29-year-old being overlooked by Amorim at the start of the 2025/26 season.
Man United have left themselves open to offers for Andre Onana while scouring the market for a new goalkeeper.
As per credible journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Mancunian giants advancing in their pursuit of Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens. He is understood to have already agreed to a move to Old Trafford and did not even play for Royal Antwerp against Mechelen this weekend.
INEOS’ potential move for Lammens puts Onana’s future at Old Trafford under further limbo, although he is not short of suitors. According to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Galatasaray have taken initial steps to explore the potential availability of Onana. Sources suggest the discussions have been exploratory thus far, but the fact that the Cameroonian international’s name has emerged on their radar suggests Galatasaray’s desire to land an experienced shot-stopper.
Onana missed the Arsenal game but was back against Fulham, although Amorim named him on the bench. This means he has clocked zero minutes of game time thus far this season, and with the World Cup happening next summer, the 29-year-old will be aware of the importance of playing regularly this season.
The Cameroon glovesman’s stance throughout the summer has been the same- he wants to stay at United and fight for his place. A hamstring injury picked up just before the start of the pre-season threw a spanner into his works, costing Onana the chance to start the 2025/26 season as United’s first-choice goalkeeper.
If Onana decides to change his stance and move away from Old Trafford for regular minutes, Galatasaray could be an ideal destination for him. They will be competing in the Champions League this season, which may tempt the United goalkeeper to move to Turkey and play for the reigning champions.
