Georgia Tech entered the weekend riding a wave of momentum—and left Coral Gables with a sweep that no one saw coming.

The No. 13 Yellow Jackets (29-11, 14-7 ACC) were handed their first series sweep of the season by the Miami Hurricanes (23-17, 9-9 ACC), capped off by a 10-2 loss Sunday at Alex Rodriguez Park. For a team with the best start since 2011 and a lineup packed with offensive firepower, the weekend exposed cracks that could haunt them down the stretch.

In Sunday’s finale, Miami exploded for 10 runs in the first four innings. Georgia Tech starter Caden Spivey, typically solid on Sundays, couldn’t find his rhythm and was tagged with his first loss of the season. Tech’s bullpen, however, showed promise—freshmen Jake Lankie and Connor Shouse combined for 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two baserunners.

But the early hole was too deep. In all three games, Miami outscored Tech 21-6, using early offense and aggressive baserunning to keep the Jackets chasing.

Georgia Tech leads Division I in doubles and boasts three players with 45+ RBIs—but the bats didn’t travel this weekend. Sunday’s bright spot was freshman Alex Hernandez, who tallied his 19th multi-hit game and 16th two-hit outing of the year. Kyle Lodise extended his on-base streak to 47 games, driving in one of Tech’s two runs. But the team hit just .216 across the series.

The absence of Kent Schmidt, out for the 19th straight game, continues to loom large over the lineup.

Despite the sweep, there are reasons to stay optimistic. Tech remains one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the nation. Their bullpen depth is developing, with Lankie and Shouse flashing potential under pressure. And they’ve bounced back well—holding a 7-2 record in games following a loss.

The Jackets don’t have time to dwell. They travel to face No. 6 Auburn on Tuesday night—a perfect opportunity to reset against a national power. First pitch is at 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network.

One bad weekend doesn’t define a season—but how Georgia Tech responds just might.
