The New York Giants got an answer to their quarterback question at the NFL draft, trading up in the first round to take Ole Miss star Jaxson Dart at No. 25.
But the Giants were not too interested in questions about another controversial quarterback, pushing aside reports of a somewhat disastrous meeting with Colorado's Shedeur Sanders before the NFL draft.
Once seen as a Top 5 draft prospect, Sanders fell to the No. 144 overall pick as teams in need of a quarterback passed him over before the Cleveland Browns finally called his name. A report emerged on Friday that the Giants, once seen as a top potential landing point for Sanders, may have bowed out after a contentious meeting with the Colorado quarterback.
NFL reporter Todd McShay said Sanders clashed with Giants head coach Brian Daboll at a pre-draft meeting.
"Shedeur didn’t have a great interview with Brian Daboll in a private visit," McShay said. "An install package came in. Preparation wasn’t there for it. [He] got called out on it. Didn’t like that. Brian didn’t appreciate him not liking it.”
Daboll was asked about the report on Saturday but pushed it aside, saying the team had good meetings with all the quarterbacks they interviewed. As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted, Giants general manager Joe Schoen stopped that line of questioning.
"G.M. Joe Schoen thereafter shut it down, trying to focus the questions on Alexander and not on players not on the New York roster," Florio wrote.
Sanders will now face an offseason challenge, joining a quarterback room in Cleveland that includes veterans Joe Flacco, Jameis Winston and Kenny Pickett with the injured Deshaun Watson returning at some point from a torn Achilles. The Browns also drafted quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round.
