On Saturday, the Grand Canyon University Lopes achieved a program-best win streak of 23 games, the longest in Division I women’s basketball, by securing a victory on the road against California Baptist in Riverside. They have also made history during this remarkable season in the program.

With this victory and a loss by UT Arlington, the Lopes secured the Western Athletic Conference regular-season championship for the first time in program history. They improved their record to 25-2, remaining undefeated in the WAC with a 12-0 record. Additionally, Grand Canyon set a new program record for the Division I era by achieving their 25th win, surpassing the previous record of 24 wins from last season.

The Lopes’ women’s basketball team received a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 on February 10.

“Before the game, we had not talked about that possibility of a regular-season championship as a group,” GCU head coach Molly Miller said, according to the GCU athletics website. “So, the last dead ball, I wanted to make it a point to take Tiarra (Brown) out, give her the news, and congratulate her on a goal we’ve had since she has been here. I’m incredibly proud of not only the hard work of this team but the daily approach they have had throughout the process.”

Senior guard Trinity San Antonio, the reigning WAC Player of the Week, delivered an outstanding performance for Grand Canyon, scoring 20 points, recording six assists, and making seven steals against her former team. Her teammate, senior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas, led the Lopes with 21 points, including seven three-pointers. This marks her sixth game of the season with six or more three-pointers made.

The last time the Lopes made it to the NCAA Division II Women’s Tournament was in 2013, in which they advanced to the second round, losing to Simon Fraser. Throughout the program history, Grand Canyon has appeared in the NCAA Tournament six times.

Grand Canyon’s next game will be on February 27, where they will face UT Arlington on the road before playing the last two of four games at home.
