Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield chime in on officiating in Tennessee Vols' loss to Purdue
Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Vols fell to the Purdue Boilermakers 72-66 on Sunday afternoon in the Elite Eight in Detroit, Michigan.  And just as many Tennessee Vol fans feared heading into the matchup, All-American center Zach Edey was the beneficiary of some very favorable officiating.

The one-sided whistle wasn't lost on two of the most beloved Volunteers to ever lace them up in Admiral Schofield and Grant Williams.  Known as "peanut butter and jelly" together at Tennessee, the duo made their feelings known on Twitter/X regarding the whistle during the game.

Williams also retweeted a number of tweets from others criticizing the officiating during the game.  Williams tagged Carsen Edwards in one of his tweets.  Edwards was a member of the Purdue team that knocked Tennessee out of the Sweet 16 in overtime 99-94 back in 2019.  Tennessee's Lamonte Turner was called for a very controversial foul on Edwards with two seconds left that allowed Edwards to knock down two free throws to force overtime.

Tennessee was whistled for 25 fouls for the game on Sunday.  Purdue was whistled for less than half at just 12.  Jonas Aidoo, who had a dreadful game that saw him on the bench for most of the second half, and Tobe Awaka picked up two fouls each very early in the game while trying to stop Edey.

The contact was also not fairly called the other way on Edey.  Edey on one rebound attempt elbowed Awaka in the head to clear him out, then was granted a foul on the putback attempt.

Edey was whistled for his first and only foul in the second half.  It was the first time in almost 35 game minutes that he was whistled for a foul.

So it's understandable why Williams and Schofield were bent with the officiating, like many other Tennessee supporters watching the game. They, more than anyone, know just how incredibly frustrating it can be to lose in part to a seemingly unfair whistle.
