The Green Bay Packers finished 11-6 in 2024 and made the NFL Playoffs for the second season in a row. However, due to spectacular regular seasons from the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay finished third in the NFC North division and was the seventh seed.
This year, their goal is to make it past the first round of the NFL Playoffs and, hopefully, compete for a Super Bowl title. However, they would also like to improve upon their 1-5 record against their division foes after they struggled mightily against them, overall, last season.
In order to do this, of course, Packers players will need to improve upon their performances from last season, taking the steps forward necessary for the team to return to title contention.
Winning is a team effort, and Green Bay is putting together a roster that, they hope, will consist of many of the best players at their respective positions. That being said, three of them have already been predicted to be among the top 100 players in the NFL by ESPN.
When ESPN began their top-100 countdown of the NFL’s best players, the first Packers player to appear on the list was quarterback Jordan Love. Playing through injuries for nearly all of last season, Love had a 63.1% completion percentage, 3,389 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 96.7 passer rating in 15 games.
In his first year as a starter in 2023, Love had a 64.2% completion percentage, 4,149 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating.
Love only played in one preseason game after injuring his left thumb and getting a procedure done to fix the damage. He expects to be ready for Week One and, if he is able to stay healthy, will undoubtedly be higher on this list next offseason.
Running back Josh Jacobs signed with the Packers as a free agent last offseason and re-established himself as one of the NFL’s premier players at the position.
In his first season with Green Bay, Jacobs rushed 301 times for 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also recorded his first career receiving touchdown while also amassing 342 receiving yards.
It truly was one of the best seasons by a running back in franchise history. His 1,329 rushing yards were the fifth-most even by a Packers tailback, trailing only Ahman Green (1,883 in 2003), Jim Taylor (1,474 in 1962), Dorsey Levens (1,435 in 1997), and Green again (1,387 in 2001).
Additionally, his 15 rushing touchdowns are tied for the third-most for a single season in franchise history. Only Taylor (19 in 1962) and Aaron Jones (16 in 2019) had more. Green (2003) and Taylor (1961) also recorded 15 rushing touchdowns in a single season.
The highest ranked Packers player on ESPN’s top-100 list is safety Xavier McKinney, who also signed with Green Bay as a free agent last season. At the time that he signed with the Packers, McKinney was considered the best free agent safety on the free agent market, and his 2024 season showed why.
In his first season wearing the Green and Gold, McKinney recorded a career-high eight interceptions, including one in each of the Packers’ first five games. He also amassed 88 tackles and allowed just a 78.5 passer rating when targeted.
McKinney was also the only Packers player named First Team All-Pro last season and made his first career Pro Bowl (he, Jacobs, and Rashan Gary were the three Green Bay Pro Bowlers).
Over the course of the season, McKinney had proven to be so dominant that opposing quarterbacks stopped targeting him, which led to his drop off in interceptions in the second half of the year.
It will be interesting to see how opposing teams approach him now and how many turnovers he is able to generate as a result, but the fact remains he is a premier safety in the league. Only two other players at his position were ranked higher than him.
