The Green Bay Packers are wrapping up their preseason with a home contest against the Seattle Seahawks, which will seem them head into the 2025 NFL season on a high note, winning 20-7 at Lambeau Field. In the coming days, roster cuts will be announced as Green Bay trims its roster from 90 to 53 players, which will provide some clarity as to who has won the position battles that were highlighted during training camp.
One position, though, that has not really been a big focus during the preseason is the that of quarterback. While Taylor Elgersma and Sean Clifford have been battling it out for a spot on the practice squad, the Packers’ top two players at the position, starter Jordan Love and backup Malik Willis, are firmly set in their places on the roster.
That being said, due to an earlier thumb injury, there were some who wondered if Love would be ready for Week One against the Detroit Lions.
Anyone who has watched the Packers’ preseason games will have noticed that Love has not played in either of their past two contests. This is because Love suffered a thumb injury in Green Bay’s first preseason game. Fortunately, it was on his left hand, his non-throwing hand.
And while it was entirely possible for Love to rehab the injury and not get surgery, both he and the team wanted to have the procedure done so that he would be 100% healthy for the regular season. The work he needed done was considered minor, so they did not think doing it just a few short weeks before the year started was a bad idea.
This decision, of course, was made with Love’s 2024 season well in mind. As fans will recall, the Packers’ starter suffered a sprained MCL in Week One and missed the next two games as a result. When he returned, his mobility was far from what it was in 2023 and led Love to, at times, make poor decisions when under pressure.
What is more, he suffered a groin injury halfway through the season, meaning that he played the entire year far less than 100%.
Green Bay is hoping they can avoid a similar scenario in 2025.
During the Packers’ preseason game against the Seahawks on Sunday, Love was interviewed on Green Bay’s sideline, and asked when he thinks he will be 100% healthy.
“Week One, we’re gonna be good, we’re gonna be rolling,” Love replied.
The Packers will kickoff the regular season at Lambeau Field against the Lions on September 7, a little over two weeks from now.
Love has returned to practice since his procedure, but has not yet resumed 11-on-11 drills. Over the past week, he has participated in 7-on-7 work in order to stay sharp, but he has yet to return having a full workload.
