The Green Bay Packers have added wide receiver Matthew Golden to the team in the 2025 NFL Draft, adding a top receiving threat to a team with several talented wideouts already. Golden has many traits that made him one of the top skill position players in the draft, and some NFL experts have compared him to a veteran wide receiver who has been extremely productive in his decade-plus-long NFL career, during which he has amassed almost 10,000 career yards.

Matthew Golden is the Green Bay Packers’ Latest Offensive Weapon

Texas Longhorns wide receiver Matthew Golden became the first pass-catcher taken in the first round by the Green Bay Packers in over 20 years. The pick received rave reviews from fans and experts alike. With high-level speed and good overall polish to his game, Golden gives the Packers a downfield threat and projects as someone who can grow into a true WR1 in the league.

NFL expert Brett Kollmann feels that Golden’s best trait that he is bringing to his new team is reliability. With so many different options at receiver, many of whom have been criticized for inconsistent play, having a player who has been a consistent producer is key.

“I think more than anything, the Packers just need reliability in that receiver room.”

Golden has already expressed excitement about playing with Jordan Love and promised fans plenty of Lambeau Leaps in the future. The hype around Golden is certainly there, leading Kollmann to compare him to one notable veteran wide receiver.

Matthew Golden Compared to NFL Veteran Brandin Cooks

Brandin Cooks has been one of the most underrated receivers of his generation. With six 1,000-yard seasons to his name and over 60 career touchdowns, Cooks has been a dynamic deep threat and explosive after-the-catch receiver for over a decade. Kollmann feels that Cooks is a good comparison for Golden.

“He reminds me a lot of a young Brandin Cooks – a legit #1 in the NFL.”

Cooks has been a player that several NFL franchises have coveted. Originally drafted out of Oregon State by the New Orleans Saints in 2014, Cooks was traded to the New England Patriots for a first-round pick in 2017, acquired by the Los Angeles Rams for a first-round pick the following season, dealt to the Houston Texans for a second-rounder in 2020, and then grabbed by the Dallas Cowboys for two late-round selections in 2023.

Cooks is one of few players in NFL history to be traded in exchange for a first-round pick multiple times in their career. With 9,873 yards from scrimmage in his career, Cooks is one of the more underrated talents on the last decade. For Golden to be compared to Cooks is quite the compliment.
