Micah Parsons is not happy in Dallas right now. That much is clear, but could the Green Bay Packers bring the rumors to fruition and pull off a real-life trade to get him? With Week 1 days away, there seems to be no resolution approaching. New whisperings – loud whispers at that – suggest that the Packers have been actively engaged with Dallas and ponied up an offer, which includes a $45 million/year contract extension for Parsons.
A deal is still unlikely, but one top analyst believes what many Packers fans do: that acquiring the perennial Pro Bowler would vault this team among Super Bowl favorites.
For all the fuss over trades or free agent signings, few players can have the individual impact that a player like Parsons would on just about any team. Especially outside of quarterback, there are only so many superstars who can do that.
A pro Bowler every season of his four-year career, Parsons has racked up 52.5 sacks in 63 games. He’s been consistent too, reaching double figures every season – even in 2024, despite missing four games – and notching an average of 28 QB hits. With TJ Watt and Myles Garrett in the AFC, Parsons is the NFC’s premier pass rusher.
Despite a strong defense overall, the Packer do not have a dominant edge rusher of any kind, though sophomore linebacker Edgerrin Cooper should help even more in that department this season. Rashan Gary led the team last year with just 7.5 sacks.
Acquiring Parsons would change all that, and ESPN’s Ben Solak, while acknowledging the low likelihood of an actual trade, agrees.
“Have been pretty vocal about my concern for Packers defensive regression this year,” Solak tweeted in response to recent rumors. “Parsons is an immediate salve. Floor and ceiling raiser. I’d make the Packers with Parsons near equal with the Eagles for NFC favorites.”
By consensus odds, the Eagles sit 3rd, behind the Bills and Ravens. The Packers are already sixth. Adding Parsons is the kind of seismic maneuver, on a defense that needs an edge rushing stud, that could realistically move them several places up the leaderboard.
If Parsons becomes available, though, does Green Bay have the stomach to shell out a realistic haul? Adam Schefter, also of ESPN, has speculated that any trade would have to be similar to the Bears’ 2018 deal for Khalil Mack: two firsts, a third-rounder, and sixth-rounder in exchange for a second-rounder and a conditional fifth plus Mack.
