The Green Bay Packers are releasing rookie linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. Dumas-Johnson, signed as an undrafted free agent, will join the team’s practice squad if he clears waivers.

Dumas-Johnson, 23, made 11 tackles this preseason, but it wasn’t enough to secure him a 53-man roster spot. Again, the practice squad is an option for the former Kentucky standout.

Dumas-Johnson played one season with the Wildcats, compiling 67 tackles (39 solo), seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. Before his time in Lexington, he spent three seasons at Georgia. He was a key piece of a Bulldogs team which won back-to-back national titles in 2021 and ’22.

Dumas-Johnson had his best season in 2022, 70 tackles (45 solo), nine tackles for loss, four sacks and one forced fumble. He earned First-Team All-American honors that season.

Packers make another cut in Jamon Dumas-Johnson

The Packers have been active in making cuts ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET 53-man roster deadline. Earlier today, the team released linebacker Isaiah Simmons. Simmons signed with Green Bay this offseason after spending the last two seasons with the New York Giants.

Simmons was selected with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals out of Clemson. Over five NFL seasons (84 games), Simmons boasts 329 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and five interceptions.

Simmons’ NFL career with the Cardinals got off to a great start, as he was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team after recorded 54 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception in 2020. In 50 games with Arizona, Simmons recorded 258 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and four interceptions. He was traded to the New York Giants ahead of the 2023 season, marking his destination for the next two seasons.

The young linebacker didn’t quite live up to expectations with the Giants, as his numbers dropped dramatically. He played in all 34 of New York’s regular season games over the past two seasons but started in just five of those games. His standout moment with the franchise came in New York’s 29-20 win over the Seattle Seahawks last season, where he blocked a game-tying field goal which teammate Bryce Ford-Wheaton returned 60 yards for a touchdown with 55 seconds remaining.
