“He wanted more” – Gary Neville discusses what Harry Kane could be thinking following loss to Chelsea

Over the weekend, Tottenham Hotspur held their own for 45 minutes against the reigning UEFA Champions League winners. However, in the second half of that match, everything fell apart for Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad as they conceded three goals. 

Following the loss, English football pundit Gary Nevill spoke about Harry Kane. He stated that the 28-year-old saw the gap between in talent between Tottenham and Chelsea in his “The Gary Neville Podcast.”

“But it’s never easy when a player wants to leave your club and everyone in the ground and in the dressing room knows that he wants to leave. Things aren’t going well,” Neville said.

“We had the stat at Crystal Palace where he’d played his first 90 minutes without a touch in the opposition box or a shot on target. Little things like that start to ring before the game.”

Neville discussed Kane’s well-documented wish to leave Tottenham in the summer originates from the striker wanting to add silverware to his personal cabinet, considering he’s yet to win much despite being the best striker in the Premier League. 

“There were alarm bells, and now there will be further questions as he looked despondent towards the end. He was playing against a very good team, and he’s been part of a Tottenham team in this situation for a number of years,” Neville said.

“He’ll be thinking, ‘I’m here again’. He’ll be thinking, ‘I’m not going to challenge for the title again at Tottenham and I’m not even going to get into the top four’. He wanted more.”

Despite the defeat and poor second-half play against Chelsea, Tottenham is seventh in the Premier League, with nine points four behind leaders Chelsea, who have 13. Nuno’s squad remains in the race early on despite the back-to-back losses, but they’ll need to get back on the winning side against another London rival in Arsenal.
