Highest doubles percentage this year for Gian van Veen, just ahead of Damon Heta and Jonny Clayton
Kieran Cleeves/PDC

Gian van Veen is having an excellent year. The 23-year-old won his first PDC ranking title in mid-March by beating Luke Humphries 8-3 in the final of Players Championship 6. He has since climbed to eighteenth place in the world rankings. Van Veen is currently the third Dutchman in the world rankings behind Michael van Gerwen and Danny Noppert. Although he is gradually closing in on the latter, the gap between the two men is still about 40000 pounds.

Van Veen already showed his strength last year with a semifinal at the European Championship and a final victory at the World Youth Championship. This year he already won a Players Championship and reached the quarter-finals at the UK Open and the World Matchplay. Van Veen has developed into a very stable player who can gradually compete for the big titles.

Key to success

It is common knowledge that Van Veen has high scoring ability, but the key to success may be his particularly high doubles percentage this year. With a double-double percentage of 46.97, no one does better on the Pro Tour.

In second place in this list we find Damon Heta. 'The Heat' tentatively clocks in at a doubles percentage of 44.32%. The top three is completed by Jonny Clayton. The Welshman, a losing finalist at the World Masters earlier this year, has a doubles percentage of 43.71% this year.

Just outside the top three, with Gerwyn Price and James Wade, we find two more players who traditionally achieve a high percentage on their doubles.

Action on the Pro Tour resumes next week, by the way, with Players Championship 24 and 25 scheduled on Monday and Tuesday in Milton Keynes, England. Wednesday then follows the qualifying tournament for PDC Tour Card holders for the World Series of Darts Finals.
