Hit horror video game Outlast is being turned into a terrifying live-action movie.
A collaboration between Lionsgate, the studio behind the Saw franchise, and Outlast developer Red Barrels, the movie is currently in development.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the Outlast movie is being produced by Roy Lee, the man behind a string of horror successes, including It, Barbarian, and Late Night with the Devil. It’s also being written by J.T. Petty, who co-wrote the games’ stories.
“Red Barrels has been pushing the limits of horror in games for more than a decade,” Petty says, “and expanding the Outlast Universe into film is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love.”
There are three games in the single-player narrative-driven survival horror series, with the first launching in 2013. It sees you play as an investigative reporter attempting to escape an asylum filled with murderous inmates. With no fighting abilities whatsoever, all you can do is run, hide, and try not to die. According to sales figures, the Outlast series has reached over 37 million people.
