The “Terry Smith Effect”: Cornerback Room Ignites the Class

Cornerbacks coach Terry Smith is responsible for not only holding Penn State’s program together in 2025 after Franklin’s firing.

However, until the past three days, Terry Smith was also the coach holding Penn State’s recruiting together as well. Penn State’s lone 2028 commit and the first three commits for the Nittany Lions in the 2027 class all came from Terry Smith’s cornerback room.

Semajay Robinson: The Lengthy Florida Shutdown Corner

The first of these to pop in the 2027 class was Florida cornerback Semajay Robinson.

Robinson is a lengthy 6-foot-2, 190-pound cornerback from Fort Lauderdale who ranks as a three-star prospect in the 2027 class according to 247Sports composite rankings. Robinson was on campus for his commitment on March 28 and is set to return on June 5 for an official visit.

Zachary Gleason Jr.: Keeping Western PA Talent at Home

Pittsburgh Central Catholic cornerback Zachary Gleason Jr. was the second commitment to pop for Penn State’s 2027 class on March 31.

The western PA prospect is rated as a three-star prospect and ranks 749th in the nation according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Like Robinson, Gleason was on campus when he committed on March 31 and is also set to return for an official visit June 5.

Ka’ron Ceaser: The Garden State’s Rising Star

Terry Smith’s recruiting tear continued into April with Penn State’s third commitment in the 2027 class from cornerback Ka’ron Ceaser out of Atco, New Jersey. Ceaser is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound cornerback with offers from Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Duke (among others) and is rated as a three-star prospect in the 2027 class.

Like Robinson and Gleason, Ceaser is scheduled to be back on campus for an official visit on June 5.

Expanding the Trenches: DL Carter Blattner and the Offensive Spark

Penn State’s first non-cornerback in the 2027 class came from defensive lineman Carter Blattner on Saturday.

Blattner is a 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end prospect from Allendale, New Jersey, who could be either a defensive end or defensive tackle at the next level. Blattner ranks as a three-star prospect in the 2027 class and ranks 417th in the nation and 8th prospect in the State of New Jersey according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Blattner chose Penn State over offers at Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Boston College, and Duke (among others) and is also scheduled to be back on campus for an official visit June 5.

Landon Blum: The Elite 4-Star Pull from Iowa

Penn State’s fifth and latest commitment came on Saturday from 6-foot-4, 200-pound wide receiver Landon Blum.

Blum is a four-star prospect out of Woodbine, Iowa, who ranks 300th nationally and is ranked as the top prospect in the State of Iowa according to 247Sports composite rankings.

In addition to Penn State, Blum held offers from Auburn, Duke, Illinois, Miami, and Iowa (among others).

Blum made his commitment during an April 4th visit to State College, his first visit to Penn State. Unlike Penn State’s other four commits, Blum has not announced a date for an official visit yet.

What’s Next for Penn State Recruiting? Momentum Heading into Summer Visits

After going into the portal to fill many of the holes on Penn State’s roster this offseason and bringing in a smaller-than-normal high school class after Matt Campbell’s hiring, Penn State’s 2027 class should have plenty of space to fill out ahead of December’s early signing day.

With momentum on their side, Campbell and staff will continue to push for commitments this spring and summer before the 2026 season begins, but with the past ten days of commitments, the 2027 class is off to a good start for the Nittany Lions.
