How SEC Rule's Change Could Impact Texas and Its Rivals

The SEC made a big scheduling announcement for football on Thursday.

Starting in 2026, all SEC football teams will play nine conference games, and the top two teams will play in the SEC Championship Game at the end of the year. Each school will play three annual opponents, with the focus on preserving some of the best rivalries in college football.

Speaking of that, it looks like the Texas Longhorns will play the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas A&M Aggies, and Arkansas Razorbacks every year once this schedule commences in 2026. Fans don't have to worry about the Red River Rivalry not being a yearly thing.

Not only will the Red River Rivalry be a yearly game, but the Longhorns will get to take on the Aggies, another one of their biggest rivals. The two teams played last season for the first time since 2011, and it was the Longhorns who won by 10 at College Station, 17-7.

This year's game will take place in Austin on November 28, while this year's Red River Rivalry game will be on October 11 in Dallas.

Texas will open the 2025 season on Saturday, August 30, against Ohio State. It will be a rematch of last season's Cotton Bowl Classic in the College Football Playoff.

Kickoff will be at Noon ET.
