The smells that a stinky pet leaves on furniture can really affect an otherwise fresh-smelling home. There are a lot of pieces to a sofa and those nooks and crannies, along with the durable material itself can really hold onto lingering unpleasant odors. Whether it's the result of accidents, shedding, or simply the expected animal smells, get rid of scents with these cleaning tips. Keep in mind, you shouldn't use harsh chemicals that can bother your furry friend later. Instead choosing the right techniques and products can effectively rid furniture of whatever wet dog smell or stains you're contending with.

Materials You'll Use

  • Baking Soda: Perfect for pet odor removal as it absorbs unpleasant smells.
  • White Vinegar: A natural deodorizer that neutralizes odors without leaving behind a strong scent of its own.
  • Enzymatic Cleaner: Specifically formulated to break down organic matter, these cleaners are the best way to get rid of urine smells.
  • Spray Bottle
  • Clean Cloth or Towel
  • Vacuum Cleaner with Upholstery Attachments

What NOT to Use

  • Avoid essential oils because many are toxic to your pets.
  • Steam cleaners can make pet urine stains worse! But they are good for general odors.

First, Launder What You Can

  • Remove machine-washable covers. Cushion and pillow covers, a slipcover if you use one, and any blankets or throws.
  • Apply a pet stain remover before laundering, if necessary.
  • Wash them as according to their label's directions with the recommended cleaning solution such as your normal laundry detergent or one with a high-quality pet odor neutralizer.

Then, Choose Your Treatment

Option 1: Baking Soda Deodorizing Treatment:

  1. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the entire surface of the couch.
  2. Gently rub the baking soda into the upholstery fabric, ensuring it reaches deep into the fibers.
  3. Leave the baking soda to sit for several hours or overnight to absorb odors.
  4. Vacuum the couch thoroughly to remove the baking soda residue, revealing a refreshed and deodorized surface.

Option 2: White Vinegar Spray Solution:

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and cool water in a spray bottle.
  2. Lightly mist the entire surface of the couch with the vinegar solution, focusing on areas with strong odors.
  3. Allow the solution to air dry completely, as the vinegar scent will dissipate as it dries.
  4. For stubborn odors, repeat the process or spot treat specific areas as needed

Option 3: Enzymatic Cleaner Spot Treatment:

  1. Follow the instructions on the enzyme cleaner product for proper dilution and application.
  2. Thoroughly saturate the affected areas with the enzyme cleaner, ensuring it penetrates deep into the upholstery fibers.
  3. Allow the enzyme cleaner to work its magic for the recommended duration, typically around 10-15 minutes.
  4. Blot the treated areas with a clean cloth or towel to absorb excess moisture and lift away residual odors.
  5. Allow the couch to air dry completely, and repeat the process if necessary for lingering odors.

    Store-Bought Products We Trust

How often should you deodorize your sofa to keep it fresh?

Deodorize your sofa every 1-2 months for general maintenance and as needed for spills or pet odors.

    1. Remove cushions and vacuum. Take off any removable cushions and vacuum crevices and under cushions, to remove loose dirt, pet hair, and debris.
    2. Sprinkle with baking soda. Evenly sprinkle about a cup of baking soda over the entire couch. Focus on areas prone to odors.
    3. Let it sit. Allow the baking soda to sit for at least 15-30 minutes, or longer for stronger odors to absorb moisture and odors from the upholstery.
    4. Vacuum again. After the baking soda has had time to work its magic, vacuum the sofa once more to remove the baking soda residue and any remaining odors.
    5. Use a fabric freshener (Optional). Spray a pet safe fabric freshener or upholstery deodorizer lightly over the sofa to leave a pleasant scent, if desired.
    6. Replace cushions and enjoy. Once the sofa is thoroughly deodorized and dry, replace the cushions and enjoy your fresh-smelling furniture.
