'If he wants to change and needs help, he has me': Andrey Rublev stands by Daniil Medvedev after US Open meltdown

Andrey Rublev has come to the defence of his compatriot Daniil Medvedev following the Russian star’s stormy first-round exit at the US Open, emphasising support over criticism in the wake of a widely publicised outburst. Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion and former world No. 1, succumbed to France’s Benjamin Bonzi in a five-set thriller, 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4, a defeat compounded by visible frustration directed at chair umpire Greg Allensworth.

For Medvedev, the loss marks his third consecutive first-round departure at a Grand Slam, a stark contrast to his previous dominance and a clear signal that the Russian, now outside the world’s top ten for the first time since early 2023, is navigating a challenging period in his career. The most memorable moment of the US Open match came in the third set when a photographer wandered onto Louis Armstrong Stadium during match point, prompting Allensworth to order a replay of Benjamin Bonzi’s first serve.

Medvedev’s reaction, a vociferous and sustained criticism of the umpire, drew attention as much for its intensity as for its context, even as he rallied to force a deciding set. Medvedev himself sought to clarify the nature of his frustration, asserting that his ire was directed at the umpire’s decision rather than the photographer.

"I was not upset with the photographer. I was upset with the decision," he said. "It was a fun moment to live. Every time there is a sound from the stands between the serves, there is never a second serve. But well, it helped me get back into the match.".

Public reaction to the outburst

Reactions from the wider tennis world have been polarising. Nick Kyrgios, ever vocal on social media, expressed sympathy for Medvedev, while Boris Becker suggested the 27-year-old seek "professional help," describing the episode as a "public meltdown." Elite coach Brad Gilbert and former player Patrick McEnroe echoed concerns, citing a pattern of emotional volatility in high-stakes matches. McEnroe went so far as to recommend a hiatus to allow Medvedev to recalibrate both physically and mentally.

Amidst the debate, Rublev offered a markedly different perspective, privileging empathy over judgement. Speaking after his own first-round 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Dino Prizmic, Rublev demonstrated his willingness to provide support while acknowledging Medvedev’s autonomy.

The Russian said, "I don't know - if he wants to change and needs help he has me, a lot of other friends and family that will help him... But it's his life and his decision what he needs to do. Only he knows what is happening.".

Rublev’s endorsement carries particular resonance given his intimate knowledge of professional pressures and personal vulnerability. He has openly discussed his own experiences with mental health, including consulting a psychologist to manage stress and expectation. Moreover, Rublev shares a profound personal bond with Medvedev, serving as godfather to the former Daniil Medvedevs' children, a relationship that transcends tennis and highlights the sincerity of his words.

He was asked on whether he has spoken to his Russian compatriot yet and Rublev stated, "I haven't spoke to him yet... I think he needs to take some time because it was a tough loss for him, but I will text him. The year he’s had in the Slams [winning only one match] has not been easy for him.".

As Medvedev contemplates the remainder of the season, Rublev’s words resonate as more than mere platitudes; they are a considered affirmation of solidarity in the face of professional turbulence. While critics dissect the optics of his compatriot’s meltdown, Rublev demonstrates that empathy and experience often speak louder than judgment.

His focus now shifts to his own campaign, with a second-round clash against rising American Tristan Boyer awaiting him. This match will test both his form and mental fortitude against the California native, who will have the crowd on his side.
