The accolades continue to roll in for tennis superstar Iga Swiatek, who added another accomplishment to her already impressive career on Tuesday in New York.
The Polish superstar faced Colombian Emiliana Arango in her first round match at the 2025 US Open on Arthur Ashe stadium. The former champion wasted little time in dispatching of Arango, recording a 6-1 6-2 victory in barely an hour to advance to the second round.
Swiatek's dominant win saw her again kick off her campaign with an impressive win. In addition to ensuring she continues to compete for the title, the former World No.1 also etched her name in history due, leapfrogging a tennis legend in the process.
By virtue of her first round victory, Swiatek has recorded 65 consecutive opening match wins on the WTA Tour. This feat sees her stand alone at the top of the list, passing tennis great Monica Seles with the most wins of that nature in the Open Era.
The World No.2 has been in astounding form since winning her maiden Wimbledon title a few weeks ago. Not known for her prowess on grass, Swiatek stormed her way to the SW19 final, dropping just one set in the process.
Swiatek would face the big-hitting Amanda Anisimova for the Wimbledon title, dismantling the American with a 6-0 6-0 scoreline. The Polish star would suffer a minor mishap in the subsequent Canadian Open, losing to rising Danish star Clara Tauson in the round of 16.
Nonetheless, the six-time Grand Slam champion would right the ship by putting on a clinic at the Cincinnati Open. Swiatek would cruise through ton the final without dropping a set, before defeating Italian Jasmine Paolini to lift her second title in as many months.
With her first round win in New York out of the way and another record in her pocket, Swiatek will face Dutch star Suzan Lamens in an attempt to win her second US Open title. The 24-year old previously emerged victorious at Flushing Meadows in 2022.
