Let's just say Western Illinois struggled defensively.
The run defense was but a soft, polite rumor, and the secondary got torched way too easily. Illinois will be able to pick and choose what it wants to do.
The idea is to see just how sharp Illinois is right away. With all the veterans on both sides of the ball, does it put this away in the first few drives?
The offense should mix it up just enough, and the defense doesn't have to deal with a slew of Leatherneck veterans at the skill spots.
The Illini will do whatever it wants to.
They beat Western Illinois 34-14 back in 2018, but in the two games against FCS teams since then - UT Chattanooga in 2022, and Eastern Illinois to open up last year - they won by a combined score of 76-0.
