Indiana Fever Announce Good News, Caitlin Clark Travels With Team

The Indiana Fever have battled through one of the toughest injury stretches in the WNBA this season, with their backcourt hit especially hard. All-Star guard Caitlin Clark has been sidelined since mid-July with a groin injury and also suffered a minor injury to her left ankle earlier this month (via Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files).

Veteran guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury, while Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald have also been ruled out for the year, leaving the team scrambling for guard depth.

These setbacks led to the signing of veteran Odyssey Sims on a seven-day hardship contract. But Sims appeared to suffer an injury on Friday, bringing more injury concerns to an already depleted roster.

Injured Indiana Fever Guards Make the Trip to Minnesota

Amid their woes, the Fever had an exciting development take place ahead of Sunday's rematch against the No. 1 seed Minnesota Lynx.

On Saturday, the Fever posted a video of the team traveling to Minnesota. Among the players who made the trip were Clark and Sims. Clark stayed back from Indiana's latest road trip to Connecticut, with the team citing her injury rehab as the reason for not traveling (via Brian Haenchen of IndyStar).

While Clark has already been ruled out for Sunday's game, her presence on the trip is a positive sign. Additionally, the Fever announced some good news on Sims. The 33-year-old is probable to play on Sunday — meaning she has avoided serious injury.

The 33-year-old veteran was originally signed on Aug. 10 to help stabilize Indiana’s depleted guard rotation. She has provided an immediate spark in her limited time, highlighted by an 19-point, seven-assist outing in her third appearance for the Fever.

As Chloe Peterson of IndyStar pointed out on X, Sims' presence on the trip also indicates Indiana will be re-signing her when second 7-day contract expires.

With multiple starters out, including Clark, the Fever have relied on her veteran experience and steady play to keep them competitive. She has averaged 8.5 points and 4.3 assists in four games with Indiana this season.

Indiana Fever's WNBA Playoff Outlook as Regular Season Nears End

Indiana enters Sunday’s matchup against Minnesota at 19-17, clinging to the No. 6 spot in the WNBA standings with eight games left to play. The Fever dropped Friday’s game 95-90 to the Lynx, and another loss could tighten the playoff race even further. A win, on the other hand, would strengthen their postseason positioning as they try to hold off the chasing pack.

Clark’s absence remains a concern, as the team has not provided a timetable for her return. Until then, the Fever will lean heavily on the players still available, with Sims’ status and contributions shaping up as a key factor in their playoff push.
