Indiana is in a perfect spot in the expectations world.

It's coming off the best season in the program's history - at least by modern standards. It's ranked, it's given the proper respect, and at the same time, almost no one seems to think last year was for 100% real.

And for those naysayers, the non-conference schedule isn't going to help with Kennesaw State and Indiana State up next. But first, getting by Old Dominion will be interesting.

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Superstar tackler Jason Henderson is back after suffering a knee injury early last season. He made 438 tackles in three seasons, the rest of the linebacking corps is full of fantastic veterans, and the defense should be far better.

The offense was the best in the nation in the red zone, was great on the ground, and Indiana has to replenish the talent a bit.

The stars of the offensive backfield are gone. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza was a top transfer from Cal, but is he the fit Kurtis Rourke was? Top rusher Justice Ellison is gone, and ...

Why Indiana Will Win

Indiana actually upgraded a few areas through the portal.

The offensive line got better, the receiving corps is terrific, and the secondary got the safeties needed to go along with a great corner situation.

Old Dominion might have several great talents, but the defense has to prove it can hold up when hammered on, the turnovers have to stop, and the team has to hold up when Indiana goes back to its ultra-efficient self and scores early.

The strange thing about this matchup is that Old Dominion actually has the personnel, the coaching, and the chops to hold up against the Indiana talent, but this is the wrong team to deal with.

Indiana is still Indiana. It'll take this seriously.

The Hoosier non-conference schedule was awful last year, too, but it did what you're supposed to do against lesser teams. The combined score in the three games was 160 to 24. It'll keep that going.
