Inter would like to extend the contract of club captain Samir Handanovic, but only if he expects a wage cut and a backup role to Andre Onana in goal.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the future of the 38-year-old will depend on whether or not he decides to accept lower wages to reflect the fact that he is no longer first-choice in goal.

Right now, Handanovic is the backup option to Onana, having fallen behind the 26-year-old in the pecking order during the first part of the season.

The contract extension that the Slovenian signed during the summer reflected the fact that when the campaign began, he was still the starter.

Now, however, a new deal would be on the basis of being the backup option to Onana.

Accordingly, Handanovic will only be offered a new deal on reduced wages.

Inter’s first choice would be to extend with the captain, but if he decides against accepting their offer, they will go in search of a new keeper to back up Onana.
