The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback room does seem to be set, with Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph No. 1 and No. 2.
But behind them is where it gets interesting.
Will Howard? Well, some fans were excited to see the rookie in action, but a broken bone in his hand saw him sidelined for the entirety of the preseason games, while veteran Skylar Thompson has looked good in his outings.
Some think the Steelers might be wise to deal Thompson in exchange for a draft pick, with Alex Kozora of The Steelers Depot suggesting a move to the Las Vegas Raiders, with a day-three pick coming back the other way.
Given that Rodgers and Rudolph are the top two, plus Howard, who The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac thinks might not even suit up at all in 2025, and begin the year on injured reserve to allow him to grow in the shadows, is that enough for the season?
The idea of moving on from Thompson, who has been superb in preseason, going 41 of 56 for 498 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in his three games, might be something the Steelers entertain, but that would leave Howard as QB3 and we know that Rodgers might not last the entire season (although he did last year).
So, it will be interesting to see how the Steelers play it.
Are they comfortable having Thompson as the third quarterback, or do they want to add a draft pick to their collection?
It is certainly an interesting exercise, with Kozora's idea shouldn't be completely shut down, especially if the Steelers can get a decent pick based on Skylar's preseason performances.
