In the final months of 2024, several professional athletes, including Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, were burglarized. It's believed they were targets of a South American theft group.
When Burrow's home was reportedly burglarized, reports indicated that a player on the Memphis Grizzlies was also a victim of theft. On Thursday, it was announced that the Grizzlies player was Ja Morant.
TMZ Sports claims "the 25-year-old guard was 'Professional Athlete 6' named in the federal complaint that was unsealed earlier this week ... which stated valuables were jacked from the crib while Morant was at the FedExForum to play against the Golden State Warriors."
Over $1 million worth of property was allegedly taken from Morant's home. The Shelby County Sherrif's Office told TMZ Sports, "Officers responded to a reported burglary around 4 p.m. EST on Dec. 20 ... and while it did not name Morant, it stated it was 'at the home of a Memphis Grizzlies player.'
Seven individuals are listed as defendants and each of them has been charged with conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property. They face 10 years in jail for allegedly being involved in burglarizing homes.
Morant hasn't seemed to let the home theft affect his play on the court. Despite missing 22 games this season so far, the Grizzlies star is averaging 20.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game. He's also shooting 44.7% from the field and 32.1% from the three-point line.
