Jack Robinson plays this close to the chest, doesn’t he? Two and a half years ago, Robbo was in a Round of 32 heat at Bells Beach against wildcard Xavier Huxtable when he wrenched his knee on an errant turn. He lost early, missed the next event and had a slew of poor results, putting his Olympic qualification in jeopardy. But he doubled down and kept surfing on the injured knee for two and a half Championship Tour seasons, winning five events (!!) and an Olympic silver medal post injury. And we never heard a peep about any lingering pain. Silent assassin, this guy.
Per a new post by Robbo, it turns out he suffered “a pretty gnarly meniscus injury” in 2023 and just underwent surgery to repair the cartilage tissue. However, with Robbo’s healthy lifestyle, the damage from Bells didn’t mean a complete write-off. “With the right training and diet, the doctors were impressed that it actually reattached almost completely on its own without surgery, but the pain never fully went away, and I couldn’t push to my limits,” he said.
Somehow, someway, Jack still won Teahupo'o (2023 and 2025), Sunset (2024), Margaret River (2024), Bells (2025) and nearly snatched an Olympic gold medal from under Kauli Vaast's handsome chin. After not pushing the limits.
With the WSL overhauling the CT format for 2026, using cumulative point totals for world titles and ending the season at Pipeline, this gives Jack the needed time to recuperate from the surgery. The season begins in April in six months. At Bells, of all places. Here’s to Robbo’s full recovery.
