The initial 53-man roster was built, but that doesn't mean the Jacksonville Jaguars were done making moves. First thing in the morning on Wednesday, new general manager James Gladstone pulled off a trade to acquire wide receiver Tim Patrick from the Detroit Lions.

The news was first reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, and the Jaguars are sending a 2026 sixth-round pick as compensation.

Patrick is a 31-year-old receiver who has been in the NFL since 2017, coming in as an undrafted player. After quick stints as a rookie for the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, he established himself on the Denver Broncos, playing there for six seasons—however, he missed two years due to injuries. Last year, he returned to the field and played 16 games for the Detroit Lions, with 33 catches for 394 yards and three touchdowns.

Tim Patrick was theoretically expected to be a starter for the Lions alongside Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown, but it feels like Detroit is happy to give third-round rookie Isaac TeSlaa the starting job.

The new Jaguars receiver is on a one-year, $2.5 million contract, but Jacksonville will only pay $1.255 million of his base salary, since the Lions have already paid a $1.245 million signing bonus.

Modern ideas

When the Jaguars hired Gladstone as the general manager, bringing modern concepts to the building was a main priority. Loading up at wide receiver to make quarterback Trevor Lawrence's life easier is part of it.

"I think the adaptability that that shows amongst the leadership group in Los Angeles and one that we'll look to embody here, knowing that this is an ever-evolving landscape in the NFL and the importance of changing and being ahead of the curve in terms of what success," the GM said in his first press conference.

The Jaguars already had Brian Thomas Jr., but they made a significant investment in the draft to trade up and select receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter. With Tim Patrick in the mix now, they have more options to build a strong passing offense.
