The Denver Broncos closed out their preseason going undefeated after a 28-19 win over the New Orleans Saints. This was the final chance for some key guys to make a difference in hopes of cracking the 53-man roster . However, running back Jaleel McLaughlin was unable to travel with the team because his partner was in labor. After the contest, Payton said that he told the running back not to even look at his phone or worry about anything, gifting him precious time with his family.
Sean Payton told reporters that Jaleel McLaughlin did not make the trip to New Orleans with the team because his partner is still in labor. Sean told him yesterday to not make the trip and be there for the birth of his baby. She was in labor today.

Payton's understanding, despite having a crowded running back room, was an incredible gesture from the eventual Hall of Fame head coach. The culture matters here, and it's something that they've been building upon for years. What the front office has been able to do in Denver, they deserve their flowers.
The 2023 undrafted rookie turned heads across the NFL by making the roster and appearing in 17 games that year. Denver has a track record of finding value out of undrafted free agents. In fact, in 20 of the last 21 seasons, the Broncos have had an undrafted rookie make the team.
McLaughlin, in 2023, tallied 410 yards on the ground with a touchdown to boot, adding 160 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He's not the lead back by any means. In 2024, he finished with 113 carries for 496 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He also added 76 yards and two touchdowns while catching passes.

Having the time with his family is an enormous blessing, and at the time of publication, it's unclear whether or not they've had the child. Payton commented on hoping to have a voicemail waiting for him after the game had ended. We're hoping so as well.
During the 2025 NFL preseason, he's appeared on the field for a total of 18 snaps. 13 coming in the backfield, one in the slot, one as a kick returner, and three on special teams during punt returns. Breaking that down even further, seven snaps while acting as a pass-catcher, one as a pass blocker, and six carrying the football. Overall, he finished with 53 yards on those six carries for an average yards per attempt of 8.8 while hauling in his only target for five yards. Despite the limited stats, we feel as though he's a lock to make the team.
Here's hoping we hear some good news soon and that we can all celebrate the birth of his child.
