Director James Gunn is sharing the inspirations behind Superman: Legacy.
In a post on Instagram, Gunn writes, “Someone on Threads asked what’s inspiring our #Superman movie other than the Donner films… but there are too many to count.”
Accompanying the post are ten images from an assortment of Superman comics, ranging from the 1940s’ Golden Age when the DC hero made his debut, all the way up to more modern fare.
One of the images Gunn posted is from All Star Superman, one of the most popular Man of Steel comics. Written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Frank Quitely, the series ran from November 2005 to October 2008.
The particular panel included in Gunn’s Instagram post shows Superman saving a suicidal girl’s life. “It’s never as bad as it seems,” he says, pulling the girl back from the edge of a rooftop.
With Gunn revealing these references, it suggests he’s confident in showing the next incarnation of Superman will be the most comic-accurate - and kindest - one yet.
