Jerry Jones, Assistant at UofL Hall of Fame, Dies

In a somber turn of events, the basketball world mourns the passing of former University of Louisville men’s basketball assistant coach, Jerry Jones, at the age of 89. Jones, who dedicated 24 years of his career to the University of Louisville, served as an assistant coach under the legendary Denny Crum from 1973 to 1996. Following his coaching tenure, Jones continued to contribute to the program as a university relations assistant from 1996 to 2001.

During his time as an assistant, Jones played an instrumental role in the Cardinals’ success, helping lead the team to five Final Four appearances and two national championships in 1980 and 1986. His exceptional contributions to the program did not go unnoticed, as he was inducted into the UofL Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998, solidifying his legacy as one of the greats.

Jones’ influence extended beyond the University of Louisville, as he also worked alongside Crum as an assistant coach for the 1987 USA Pan American Games team, showcasing his expertise on an international stage. Furthermore, Jones served as the chairman of the Assistant Basketball Coaches Committee of the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches), demonstrating his commitment to the development and growth of the coaching profession.
