FRISCO - So Bill Belichick's contract commitment to leave the NFL to coach in college isn’t really a commitment at all.
Shocking, eh?
NFL Network is reporting that the legendary coach's new contract at the University of North Carolina - with the ink still wet - includes a $10 million buyout if he leaves prior to June 1, 2025.
And it is also being reported that "multiple NFL teams have inquired'' about Belichick reconsidering his shocking move to college football.
Among the inquiring teams? The Las Vegas Raiders, with Tom Brady - the coach's partner in Super Bowl lore in New England - as part of that ownership group.
Among the should-be-inquiring teams?
Your Dallas Cowboys.
I will put this simply and bluntly and in a way not meant to demean incumbent (for at least a few more days) coach Mike McCarthy ...
If Jerry and Stephen Jones, who are presently knee-deep in talks with McCarthy about the past (evaluation) and the future (presumed negotiations) haven't ducked out of their McCarthy meetings here inside The Star to be among the Belichick 'inquiring' teams?
It's asleep-at-the-wheel football malpractice.
To me, Belichick's "Back to School'' move always defied logic. Why do this again? Because 70 years ago Lil' Billy was a toddler as his dad served as an assistant Tar Heels coach? Really?
Future Pro Football Hall of Famer Belichick recently decided he wouldn't be the next head coach of the Cowboys or any other NFL team because he'd accepted a job at the University of North Carolina.
Or so it seemed.
While include a buyout clause that would allow an exit after just six months on the job ... unless an exit was a true consideration?
I still cannot fathom why Belichick signed onto UNC before the NFL Coaching Carousel played out. Why not just wait a few weeks before deciding on UNC to see which NFL jobs come open?
But now? It'd cost $10 million to leave college. The smart NFL team of course would offer to not only pay Belichick but to pay the penalty. And in the case of Dallas? The Cowboys get the rare coach who can be considered "better than McCarthy.'' They get the disciplinarian this sometimes-cartoonish franchise needs.
Oh, and Jerry gets his beloved headlines.
The hire might be difficult and complicated, Jerry. But the phone call to your supposed "buddy'' Belichick ought to be easy.
