John Brenkus, the former host of Sport Science, passed away at the age of 54, according to a statement released on his social media. It was revealed he was battling depression.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away,” the statement read. “John, co-found of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.TV and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy Award-winning ‘Sport Science,’ had been battling depression.
“John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025. His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”
Best known for his time with Sport Science, Brenkus’ hosting duties on the show broke down athletic feats, re-analyzing major sporting moments and more. ESPN and SportsCenter regularly ran segments from the show.
Brenkus brought in professional athletes to test scientific hypothesis and even “average joes” for comparison. His Brinx.TV was founded as a platform for sports and general media coverage, as well as betting.
It wasn’t too long ago that Brenkus opened up about his battle with depression. In an interview with Marcellus Wiley, Brenkus revealed he attempted suicide but was actually saved by his dog.
“I fell into a very deep depression,” Brenkus told Wiley. “I come off of selling my company, selling Sports Science, ESPN … You know the isolation that you feel living in a mountain town, the cold weather, injuries, things not feeling right, I spiraled into a deep, deep depression. I was flat-out suicidal. So much so, I had a noose tied around my neck, I was ready to do it and my dog Zeppelin came to my rescue literally, pulled on my pants on my jeans, and was literally driving me crazy, wouldn’t leave me alone.”
