Houston football has added a standout local talent to its 2026 recruiting class with the commitment of running back John Hebert.
The Strake Jesuit product narrowed his choices and ultimately flipped from Washington State to stay home and play for UH. He became the Coogs’ first running back commit in the cycle.

Hebert’s junior year nearly rewrote Texas high school rushing totals. He rushed for an astounding 3,542 yards and 39 touchdowns, finishing with a school-record average of 9.4 yards per carry, making him one of only a handful of players in UIL history to eclipse 3,000 rushing yards in a season.
Listed as a three-star recruit by national outlets, Hebert also ranks No. 31 among running backs nationally and No. 75 overall in Texas, according to 247Sports evaluations. His production earned first-team all-state honors in Texas’s 6A classification and put his name on the radar during one of the most competitive high school seasons in the nation.
Houston’s recruitment of Hebert underscores a renewed emphasis on retaining top local prospects. He joins other in-state signees like Paris Melvin Jr., Jayden Warren, and five-star QB Keisean Henderson in what is shaping into a powerful homegrown core for the Cougars’ 2026 class.
At 5‑foot‑10 and 185 pounds, Hebert may not fit the traditional size profile of Power Four workhorses. Still, his balance of vision, straight-line speed, and contact durability, plus a disciplined yet humble temperament, make him a prospect worth watching as he transitions to Division I football.
