Vitor Belfort has big plans for his next career move, as he is planning on making a super fight.
Belfort was recently inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, as the announcement was made at UFC 315. He made his UFC debut in 1997, securing big wins against Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold, and Dan Henderson. Now, Belfort wants to make some major changes in the combat sports industry. He has patented a new glove, which resembles a boxing glove. However, it allows the fingers to be exposed, allowing for clinching and more exchanges.
Belfort hopes this levels the playing field between MMA and boxing. If that is the case, he wants to make a dream match-up between Jon Jones and Anthony Joshua. The rise of crossover fights show this may be possible. Floyd Mayweather boxed Conor McGregor in 2017. Francis Ngannou also fought Tyson Fury and Joshua. Those fights generated massive paydays. The new gloves by Belfort could make the fights more competitive. There have not been any official announcements, but he has big plans if he gets his way.
“I patented this glove, as you know. It’s creating a boxing fight where we MMA guys can grab the hands, the clinch, no elbows, no takedowns, just hands… Let’s see who has the best hands. The boxing clinch is one thing. The MMA clinch is different. We’re not going to kick the boxers. We’re not going to take them down. But let’s see who has the best hands. Who can fight? Who can endure the grinding? That would be my dream, to combine these sports, as a hobby for both athletes.
“Hopefully one day I can find a promoter that will let me co-promote with them and bring this to reality,” Belfort said. “I would love to see let’s say Jon Jones fight Anthony Joshua. That would be a dream fight for me, and I believe for you too — but not just boxing. Jones would be able to bring the clinch, grab the guy. I really believe now [under these rules], it really becomes a 50-50,” Belfort said
