Jonathan Kuminga’s Warriors Future Down to 2 Options: Report

As the NBA offseason approaches September, the main headline continues to be the ongoing saga between the Golden State Warriors and restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

Of course, Kuminga found himself out of Steve Kerr’s rotation last season after the Warriors acquired Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline and his role moving forward in Golden State is uncertain.

Because of this, it has been reported that the young forward is looking to move on from Golden State this offseason after rejecting their contract offer, though no other team has met the Warriors’ high asking price for him in a sign-and-trade.

Due to this, it appears as though Kuminga will be back with the Warriors this season unless another team is willing to make a major move before the offseason ends.

While Kuminga does look like he will be back in Golden State, it has yet to be determined for how many years and how much money.

Kuminga's Warriors future down to 2 options

According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, the only two options remaining for Kuminga is to sign the Warriors’ two-year, $45 million contract that includes a team options and zero trade restrictions or accept the $7.9 million qualifying offer that will make him a free agent next summer.

Out of both options, Siegel signaled that the best one would be for him to accept Golden State’s two-year offer that they are holding firm on.

“The Warriors believe their offer is fair value for Kuminga to continue growing in his role next to the team's stars, and it's easy to believe why the Dubs' offer makes sense,” Siegel wrote. “Not only would they be guaranteeing Kuminga more money right away, but Golden State's offer basically clears the air, for the time being, and opens the door for a potential trade before February's trade deadline.”

While this contract could work out for both the Warriors and Kuminga, Siegel reported that Kuminga’s camp do not see it that way as they would no longer hold leverage in where the young forward ends up.

Despite this, it is a much safer option for Kuminga, especially with his role in Golden State unclear this season which could lead to him taking a major pay cut in free agency summer if he decides to accept the qualifying offer.

Either way, it appears as though Kuminga is set to be back with the Warriors this season, though his time in Golden State is likely approaching an end either via trade before the deadline or in free agency next offseason.
