Jordan Love reveals first impression of Matthew Golden: ‘He’s a great dude’

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is ready to do some big things with Matthew Golden this fall. Love was asked about his first impressions of the rookie wide receiver at his charity softball game this past weekend.

“He’s a great dude,” Love said, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. “I’m excited to see just his potential on the football field. But just the start we’ve had, doing routes on air and things like that, he looks like a stud, looks like a very polished receiver, so I’m excited to see just how far he can take it.”

The Packers selected Matthew Golden in the first round, and it was the first time in 22 years the team selected a wide receiver that high in the draft. After the Packers made their selection, head coach Matt LaFleur called Jordan Love to let him know he had another offensive weapon to work with.

Love then watched Golden’s highlights when he played for the Texas Longhorns last year. “The speed speaks for itself. Running a 40-yard dash, any time you get a 4.2, that’s some blazing speed right there, so I’m excited to see how fast he is on the field,” Love said. “I’ve seen all the highlights, all the good stuff, so we’ll see once we get practice rolling and everything how good he is.”

In 2024, Golden caught 58 passes for 987 yards and nine touchdowns at Texas after transferring from Houston. At the Combine in February, Golden recorded a 4.29 40-yard dash time, the fastest among all receivers.

“In critical situations, I always showed up,” Golden told reporters shortly after he was drafted. “When our back was against the wall, they could count on me to come out with a big play, and that’s something I kept doing continuously. Coming here, that’s definitely the same mindset I’m bringing – to make big plays and come out here and win games.”

Love and the Packers are hoping that Golden can be an impact receiver. Green Bay hasn’t had a player record at least 1,000 receiving yards since Davante Adams in 2021 (1,553).
