Josh McCown, Brennan Marion, and More: Possible Head Coach Candidates for Sam Houston

KC Keeler has surprisingly left Sam Houston to return to Temple, in his home state of Pennsylvania. Keeler is a tremendous coach who led Sam Houston through the transition from FCS to FBS. At the FBS level, he is the only coach to win national titles at two separate schools, winning them at Delaware in 2003 and Sam Houston in 2020. He has been a college head coach since 2003, and the Bearkats have been surprisingly competitive in their two years in the FBS. They'll attract solid candidates..

Josh McCown

Minnesota Vikings, QB Coach

A Sam Houston State alumni and longtime NFL player, he is a high-profile name relative to a team that is new to the FBS. He was considered a candidate for the Houston Texans a few years ago. This season he has coached Sam Darnold to a career resurgence and helped Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings to a 10-2 start. Very few guys play 18 years in the NFL, even fewer are candidates for this job. He’ll be one to watch here.

Brennan Marion

UNLV, Offensive Coordinator

Brennan Marion has had offensive success everywhere he’s coached at. He’s been rumored to be a candidate for a few G5 openings. Since 2018 his stops have included William & Mary, Hawaii, Pittsburgh, Texas, and now UNLV. He is as innovative as they come and his team's ability to run the ball out of the Go-Go offense is assured. This “winning by being different” aspect might be what Sam Houston could thrive under.

Van Malone

Kansas State, Assistant Head Coach/DB Coach

The past few off-season's we have heard Van Malone mentioned for a myriad of G5 head coaching openings. He will get one before too long. He is a heck of a coach with an impressive resume that includes stops at North Dakota State, Western Michigan, North Texas, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Southern Miss, SMU, and Mississippi State. Those are some serious chops and big-name coaches he’s worked with. This feels like a school that could take a chance on him.

Clint Killough

Incarnate Word, Head Coach

Clint Killough, still only 31, took over at UIW when GJ Kinne left for Texas State. He led Incarnate Word to an 8-2 record last year. Currently they are 6-2, ranked in the top 10 in the FCS, and will likely be a playoff team. He had been an assistant here under multiple head coaches before that and at Bowling Green. Combining his success offensively, wins as head coach, and coaching tree, I don’t expect him to be at the FCS level too much longer. His G5 experience and head coaching success make him appealing.

Buster Faulkner

Georgia Tech, Offensive Coordinator

Faulkner is a big reason that Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets have turned it around so quickly. He won national titles as an assistant at Georgia prior to this stint. He has extensive experience in the G5 before that at Middle Tennessee, Arkansas State, and Southern Miss. His name is hot right now and has only recently popped up in head coaching mentions. This can be good and bad depending on who is hiring.
