Julio César Chávez Jr. has been released from prison in northern Mexico, where he had been held since August following his deportation from the United States. The former middleweight champion, and son of Mexican boxing legend Julio César Chávez, is facing accusations of cartel involvement and arms trafficking.
A judge in Hermosillo ruled that Chávez will not remain in custody while awaiting trial but barred him from leaving Mexico. The court also established a three-month investigative period to further review the case. His lawyer, Rubén Fernando Benítez Alvarez, dismissed the allegations as “speculation” and “urban legends.”
Chávez’s legal troubles escalated after he was detained in the U.S. in July. Shortly after his high-profile fight against Jake Paul in Los Angeles. Mexican authorities had already issued an arrest warrant for him dating back to 2023, though President Claudia Sheinbaum noted he had been largely outside the country.
The charges stem from a broader probe Mexican prosecutors began in 2019 into the Sinaloa Cartel. Investigating organized crime, human trafficking, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking, in coordination with a U.S. complaint.

If Chávez manages to clear his name and avoid prison, he may still attempt to fight again domestically in Mexico. Smaller promoters might be willing to stage bouts, banking on his name recognition. However his chances of returning to the international stage especially U.S. based events are slim. Unless the legal cloud is fully lifted. It’s safe to say that his fight against Jake Paul is his last payday that he’ll ever earn in the ring.
